RWTH and Viega develop research platform for innovative drinking water management
The "Viega Cube Aachen" has now been officially inaugurated in the test hall of the Institute of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Building E3D at RWTH Aachen University. The research platform is used for the development of products and methods to improve energy efficiency in the provision of hygienically safe potable water. The Cube is the result of a close cooperation between RWTH Aachen University and Viega GmbH & Co. KG.
The research subject of the new platform in the area of innovative potable water management, which reliably prevents hygiene risks due to standing water in the piping system in buildings and automatically regulates hygienically critical temperatures of the drinking water. The modular design of the Viega Cube also makes it possible to link a potable water management system with other building technology components. Various heat generators, for example, can be tested and evaluated using this system.
"At the Viega Cube Aachen, we can conduct interdisciplinary research on the latest methods. Developments can thus be aligned with practical requirements at a very early stage and further developed in an application-oriented manner," explains Professor Chris-toph van Treeck, director of the Institute of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Building E3D.
Ralf Baginski, Chief Technology Officer at Viega, confirms the benefits of interdisciplinary cooperation in future research projects: "The Viega Cube Aachen gives us the opportunity to work together with research institutions and other companies to drive innovations that pay off in intelligent and at the same time energy-efficient building technology."
Students will also benefit to a great extent. Van Treeck sees further added value in the strengthening of practice-oriented teaching with the Cube, which can be used to demonstrate the technology and digital management of a drinking water system.
