iCare – Individual Comfort in Augmented Reality Environments

  Copyright: © e3D

With the help of the iCare Lab, it will be possible to explore issues of thermal comfort and ventilation in interaction with other parameters in indoor environment such as noise, lighting, and large-scale video projections under controlled conditions:

  • Influence of color temperatures, noise levels, and virtual backdrops (e.g. park atmosphere) on our temperature perception; effects of lighting settings (color temperature and brightness) on human’s performance.
  • Investigation of video communication with augmented reality elements and its interaction with the perception of indoor climate conditions.
  • Application and evaluation of novel control concepts of building automation and interface design, with a special focus on local and individualized conditioning.
  • Priming of people outside the laboratory and overcoming of the physical wall by projecting indoor events onto the LEDs on the exterior walls.

Questions addressing human well-being, performance, and energy efficiency in indoor environments are investigated here on an equal footing and with the assumption of an agreement of the optimization goals.

  • Surface temperature control in the range of 10-50°C using 36 capillary tube elements allows horizontal and vertical radiation asymmetries. The surface temperature in the floor area of the workplaces can be controlled more granularly.
  • KNX-based control of lighting (cool and warm white, brightness, atmospheric light for virtual backdrops)
  • Indoor air conditioning through mixed / displacement ventilation and humidity control in the range of 20 to 90%.
  • Audio system for reproduction of sound backdrops (e.g., noise) and use in video conferencing setup
  • Wall projection of the image and video for the interior using laser phosphor projectors and periscope optics (roof placement), which can be used as an extended desktop of the workplaces and interface of the building automation system
  • LED walls for the transmission of interior information (including video recordings) to the exterior surfaces
