EnEff-Campus Living Roadmap – Development of an energy supply concept with model-based predictive control based on a Living Roadmap by the example of the research center Jülich
Regarding a sustainable energy supply of buildings and districts by heating, cooling and electricity, holistic energy systems are required, which focus on urban and technical issues in accordance with the user’s needs. Due to expiring contracts with the local energy supplier, the research center Jülich has to reorient itself. Along with a high need for technical overhaul concerning existing buildings, presumably necessary new buildings and the aim to mainly integrate renewable and low-emission energy into the supply infrastructure, a great appropriate platform to develop new energy concepts is offered.
Therefore, the research center Jülich will be energetically mapped as a virtual district. The concept of a dynamic “Living Roadmap” is used as a planning tool, enabling an automated adaption of the planning process along with rapidly adapting conditions. The necessity of developing a “Living Roadmap” is derived from the traditional sequence of planning and implementation, as an often conducted, one-time setting of system controls for new plants does not consider adjustments in terms of plant expansions in sufficient extent. Thus, an optimal operation of the system can rarely be reached. Using the concept of a virtual district as a “Living Roadmap” and a sustainable planning tool the continuing adjustment and support of the transformation of the energy concept – with regard to a holistic system control by integrating the user – may be possible.
In cooperation with the institute for Energy Efficient Buildings and Indoor Climate (EBC) and the research center Jülich, an intelligent energy management in consideration of all energy flows will be developed. Thereby, the focus lies on the integration of renewable energies, on the low-emission use of local combined heat, power and cooling systems and on waste heat at different temperature levels considering the existing infrastructure.
