BauSIM has been organized under the umbrella of IBPSA Germany and Austria since 2006 and takes place every two years. The focus of the conference is on energetic and ecological building and urban scale simulation and the underlying methods.

Further points of focus are complementary topics such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), simulation at component level or monitoring and operational optimization of buildings and urban systems. It thus offers a forum for the presentation of current research results and for the interdisciplinary discussion of the latest developments and trends in the field of simulation and data-supported development of sustainable buildings and districts.

This year, 167 stakeholders from the fields of science and teaching, practical application (design, planning, implementation, operation), software development and public administration took part in the conference. Due to the current situation, the complete conference was held digitally. Our chair was present with a total of 6 submissions and was able to cover many topics of the conference.

Avichal Malhotra was presented with several submissions on topics of modeling and simulation at city level and BIM-based planning tools and integration approaches. Among other things, he presented the “CityGML Analysis Toolbox (CityATB)” for working with CityGML data for energy simulations at an urban level. Furthermore, he also presented a method for setting levels of development/detail depending on the defined interests of various stakeholders in the submission “Systematic recognition of datatypes and resolution for defining the depth of district and building level retrofits”.

Amin Nouri together with Ben Krämer and other colleagues, presented the development of quality standards for energetic building and system simulation as a planning tool in his submission “Entwicklung von Qualitätsstandards für die energetische Gebäude- und Anlagensimulation als Plannungswerkzeug”. Various previously defined test scenarios were carried out in different simulation programs and the results were further compared.

Current developments in the field of AI-based object recognition in buildings were presented by Marie Leonhardt, Nicolas Pauen, Jan-Niklas Joost and Lev Kirnats in the submission "Implementation of AI-based reference processes for computer-aided object recognition in buildings". The focus here was on the integration of various data sources in a deep learning framework.

Nicolas Pauen, Dominik Schlütter and Jaroslaw Siwiecki presented in their submission "Integrated Representation of Building Service Systems: Topology Extraction and TUBES Ontology" which highlighted a representation of systems in the field of technical building equipment based on SemanticWeb principles and a corresponding methodology for the analysis and complexity management of topological relationships. This research achievement was honoured with a Best Paper Award at the end of the conference and will be published next to the conference proceedings in a special edition of the BAUPHYSIK Journal at the end of the year.

Overall, the interesting and successful BauSIM conference 2020 enabled a scientific exchange despite the special circumstances. Special thanks go to professors Mr. Monsberger, Ms. Hopfe, Mr. Krüger and Mr. Passer as well as the entire organizational and technical team for this year's alignment.
